Bone Densitometry X-Ray Equipment Operation 
in Pennsylvania

Bone Densitometry x-ray equipment used in the healing arts must be operated by or under the supervision of an appropriately credentialed physician. Operators or auxiliary personnel in a licensed practitioner's office must either be:

  1. Currently registered and certified by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in Radiography,
    - or -
  2. Approved by the Pennsylvania Department of State, Bureau of Professional and Occupational Affairs after passing the Examination in Radiography,  (See State Board of Medicine Licensure Information)
    - or -
  3. Certified by the International Society for Clinical Densitometry (ISCD)

Operators or auxiliary personnel that work in hospitals, that are regulated by the Department of Health (DOH), shall meet the BRP radiological requirements of 25 Pa. Code § 215.24(c). The DOH regulations are in accordance with written job descriptions and employee qualifications. The BRP radiological requirements of 25 Pa. Code § 221.11(b) have specific requirements for determination of competence and for continuing education and they apply to all operators of diagnositc x-ray equipment.
