Finishing and Storing Compost
Using the windrow-and-turn method, compost will usually be ready in about
ten months. Compost is finished if:
- Windrows do not reheat after turning; and
- A sample of compost sealed in a plastic bag for 24 to 48 hours does
not smell offensive when the bag is opened.
When active composting is complete, the material should be moved to large
curing and storage piles for at least 45 days to allow for final stabilization.
Compost can be screened to remove contaminants and make the product more
uniform. Screening is optional, however, and depends on the end use of the
compost.
