| MOSHANNON DISTRICT OFFICE WIND TURBINE |
|
A 10 Kw Bergey wind turbine helps to supply the energy needs of the Moshannon District Office. The wind turbine, owned by Miller Brothers Construction, provides some of the power used by the building and also provides continuity of operations during power outages so that nearly normal business operations can be maintained. The wind turbine charges a 35 Kw.hr battery bank before the excess power is fed into the building or the electric grid. Site Conditions at the Moshannon District Office are particularly conducive to the benefits of a wind turbine. The location is favorable because of its high elevation and unobstructed wind access from the northwest. The wind energy offsets traditional energy costs by generating approximately 1,670 Kw/hours per month with a projected net monthly savings ranging from $100.00 - $200.00. A power purchase agreement with Penelec has been negotiated to facilitate the exchange of excess generation. This “net-metering” arrangement provides for extra power produced to flow back into the electric grid – in effect, turning the electric meter backwards. The building, a green building, has significant natural lighting and very good insulation. When the electric grid goes down, the wind turbine’s battery bank provides 115 volt A. C. power to parts of the building. During extended power outages, work at the Moshannon District Office is able to proceed with little interruption. Additional circuits will probably be added in the future to those supported by the battery bank, which is recharged whenever the wind turbine is turning.
