This type of rock is diabase, an intrusive rock also know generally as "granite", and "dimension stone". Here it is mined for tombstones, countertops, etc. Dry faces of the rock are grey, dark grey areas are wet. When slabs are polished, they are greenish-black.

Bluestone Mining

Both of these photos are from a site in Susquehanna County and depict mining of the Catskill Formation, Devonian age siltstone which splits along a flat plane and is known as "bluestone" or "flagstone". Stone is removed by cutting with a rock saw. Saw cuts can be seen on the flat in the top picture. Stacked pallets of the finished product are shown in the bottom photo.
