Project Area

Beginning in September 2004, the Foundation Coal Corporation's Cumberland and Emerald mines in Greene County, formerly RAG American Coal, will conduct longwall mining operations underneath segments of Interstate 79 south of Waynesburg, Greene County. The undermining should be complete in 2009. The Department of Environmental Protection is providing detailed information on this webpage about the mining operations, including a map showing where the undermining will occur, regularly updated reports on the progress of the undermining, and a Power Point slideshow that provides background information on longwall mining and why this mining is allowed to occur underneath I-79.

Please feel free to explore this page, and if you need more detailed information, please don't hesitate to contact our California District Mining Office at
(724) 769-1100.

It is also important to note that the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is responsible for traffic control and lane closings around the sections of highway being effected by the undermining. Please contact PennDOT for more specific information on the detours and road conditions.
