"The Women's Humane Society has won many awards for design excellence, but
none are as meaningful to our firm as the Governor's Award for Environmental Excellence,
as it serves to recognize the efforts of those who choose to assume a stewardship role in
the protection of our environment. This award can be a catalyst for change in the way that
we design and build in this state and throughout the United States."

Hosting and Toasting Pollution Prevention The 1997 Governor's
Awards for Environmental Excellence ceremony was the highlight of DEP's second annual
Pollution Prevention and Energy Efficiency Conference, Oct. 7-8, 1997. Governor Tom Ridge
personally presented the awards, citing pollution prevention and zero emissions goals as
the most environmentally sound method for improving both environmental and economic
performance.
These annual awards are bestowed upon individuals, employers, municipalities and
institutions benefiting the state's environment and economy in the categories of Striving
for Zero Emissions, Pollution Prevention, Energy Efficiency, Recycling, Land Use,
Technology, and Education/Outreach. Last year's recipients reported combined annual
savings of more than $79 million, investment returns ranging from 122 percent to 173
percent, liquid-waste reductions of 27.5 million gallons, a combined solid-waste reduction
of more than 15 million tons and almost 19 million tons of combined air emissions
reductions.
We invite our partners in Pennsylvania to apply for a Governor's Award for
Environmental Excellence and join the growing ranks who realize that pollution prevention
and energy efficiency are cost effective answers to our environmental problems in the 21st
Century.
The overall theme of the 1997 Pollution Prevention and Energy Efficiency Conference was
"Environmental Management as a Business Strategy." The 300 corporate and
state agency attendees reacted enthusiastically to the message of how fulfilling
environmental management objectives enhances the corporate bottom line. Conference
sessions focused on techniques and strategies to assist organizations in transforming
environmental management into core business functions. The nationally renowned
speakers included Christine Branson, Industrial Technology Institute; Deborah Savage,
Tellus Institute; and Chris Stinson, University of Texas. Each Conference visitor
received Environmental Management Systems: An Implementation Guide for Small and
Medium-Sized Organizations. |
