Preparing for the 21st Century

In June 1997, Governor Ridge created the 21st Century Environment Commission to set a vision for the 21st century environment and foster an environmental ethic in government, business and all citizens of the Commonwealth. The Commission is made up of environmental, business, government and academic leaders, with priority teams working in the areas of environmental stewardship, sustainable use of natural resources, human health and environmental protection and land use.

The teams met regularly to determine priorities, explore creative cost-effective solutions and find new ways to measure real progress. Top priorities for The 21st Century Commission include revitalizing existing infrastructures, developing comprehensive watershed management strategies, promoting zero emissions, developing a strategic plan to address acid mine drainage problems and creating incentives for land redevelopment.

As the state's major environmental initiative, the commission will examine the sustainable use of natural resources, including agriculture, forestry, managing non-renewable resources, reclamation of abandoned industrial sites, acid mine drainage and managing the ecosystem to maintain diversity.  Public roundtables served as a medium to introduce the commission and provide insight.
