People Are Talking

"Since our site visit, we have been implementing a revised record keeping and tracking system for rinse materials. We are recycling hazardous waste within the plant, and are collecting solvents that used to end up on the plant floor, with the intention to reuse them once the proper filtering equipment is installed."

— Jack Clark
Regional Environmental Engineer
Ethan Allen

"Although we had already begun a number of waste minimization projects prior to the site visit, we were exposed to a number of new ideas. OETD suggested installing a wood handling system next year, to handle small pieces of railroad cross ties we burn to generate energy for operations. This will reduce scrap going to the landfill, a potential savings of $90,000 per year."

— Paul Beswick, Plant Manager Koppers Industries

Site Visits Make Cents

In 1997, OETD's voluntary Pollution Prevention/Energy Efficiency Site Visit Program helped 50 Pennsylvania companies save money. On a typical site visit, a DEP interdisciplinary team of experts on air, waste, water, energy efficiency and pollution prevention technology walk through facilities identifying opportunities for significant reductions in waste stream, air emissions, energy usage and water discharges.

A stunning example of what can be achieved was the site visit by DEP staff last year to Wilton Armetale, a non-ferrous foundry located in Mount Joy, Lancaster County. By implementing DEP's energy efficiency suggestions, Wilton Armetale reduced energy consumption by 405,000 kiloWatt hours, saving approximately $40,000.  As a result of this site visit, Wilton Armetale instituted an environmental management system and reduced waste from its facility by more than 60 percent.

DEP is servicing businesses beyond the typical industrial and manufacturing sectors.   An egg-producing farm, an emu ranch and food product manufacturers Welch Foods, Godiva Chocolate and Frito-Lay requested site visits in 1997.  Service industries as diverse as the Springfield Township Board of Supervisors and The Center Daily Times newspaper have joined newspaper have joined the site visit program.  An Amish-owned metal parts cleaning equipment company recently made new contacts with technical assistance service providers to address its business needs.
