High Performance Schools Project

The High Performance Schools Partnership Project is an initiative sponsored by the Department of Environmental Protection, and combines the expertise and experience of several Southwestern Pennsylvania universities, organizations, consulting firms, the Pittsburgh School District, the Pennsylvania Center for Environmental Education, and the Department of Education. Its objectives are to improve the physical learning environment of teachers, students and staff throughout the Commonwealth, and to ensure cost-effectiveness of school construction and operation by clearly identifying performance standards for energy-efficient design, use of alternate building materials, and identification of green operation and business practices. The recommended standards developed by the study will empower local school boards throughout the Commonwealth to make better-informed decisions and will facilitate the pass-through of energy-efficiency, pollution prevention and green operational practices into the surrounding communities.
