Information related to preventing recurrence of problem and maintaining a chemical management strategy
  • Chemical management by inventory control should be a priority as it can identify and potentially prevent accumulation of unwanted chemicals while eliminating some of the more toxic and/or hazardous types. Use of this concept can reduce disposal costs and regulatory liability, and foster a safer school environment. Examples of chemical management plans and inventory methods can be found at the following websites:
  • How to start inventory - The best way to start inventory is to look in the following places: Science laboratories and classrooms, vocational shops/areas, facility maintenance areas, fleet and vehicle maintenance areas, art rooms, printing and photographic areas, swimming pools, pest and weed control activities, nurse’s office or medical treatment areas.
    • Click here for DEP inventory sheet (.xls format).
      • Click here for a list of chemicals with their disposal classification
  • For information relating to the benefits of green chemistry visit www.acs.org
  • You can read more about virtual chemistry by visiting www.jchemed.chem.wisc.edu
  • Information regarding micro-scale chemistry may be obtained by visiting www.silvertech.com/microscale
  • The Pennsylvania Department of Education funds a Science in Motion program at various locations within the state. This program conducts various laboratory experiments at your school and has sophisticated laboratory equipment such as gas chromatography, and high-performance liquid chromatography that utilize smaller sample size and increased detection limits.
