Pittsburgh Coal Conference An announcement of a special Pa. Coal Mining IOF session has been placed in the preliminary technical program brochure of the 2003 International Pittsburgh Coal Conference ("PCC") scheduled for September 17. Pa. Energy Harvest Grant

The Pennsylvania Energy Harvest Grant request for proposals has been released. The Energy Harvest Grant mixes money from the Clean Air Fund, Growing Greener and U.S. Department of Energy grant funding sources to support clean and renewable energy projects that can help the state better manage its energy resources, improve the environment and spur economic development.Click here to apply for the Energy Harvest Grant.

Three Pennsylvania companies have been awarded Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grants to determine the feasibility of innovative concepts. Burle Industries Inc. of Lancaster and EverNu Technology LLC of Maple Glen were each awarded a grant. Eriez Manufacturing of Erie, received two grants. Winning applications were chosen on the basis of scientific and technical merit from 1,227 applications submitted in 47 technical categories. Click here to review the details about the awards.  Metalcasting IOF

The Pa. Foundry Association (PFA) welcomed DEP Secretary Kathleen McGinty to its 28th annual meeting at the Radisson Penn Harris Hotel in Camp Hill on May 12. Secretary McGinty’s keynote address focused on the PAIOF partnership, waste foundry sand issues related to beneficial reuse, innovative technologies and energy efficiency funding opportunities to which DEP has committed to bring to the industrial sector. The meeting celebrated the second year of collaboration between the PFA, Penn State University, DEP and the Pennsylvania Metalcasters as a PAIOF metalcasting partnership. Mining IOF

A Pennsylvania coal mining industry sector road-mapping meeting was held at the University of Pittsburgh on May 5. More than 60 persons from government, academia and the coal mining industry attended the workshop. Michael Eastman, project manager for the Clean Coal Power Initiative of the U.S. DOE’s National Energy Technology Lab in Pittsburgh, was the keynote speaker. Rep. Peter J. Daley, D-49, provided a speech on the current economic and political issues surrounding the coal industry in Pennsylvania. J. Scott Roberts, DEP deputy secretary for mining, was also in attendance.  Solicitations

The State Technologies Advancement Collaborative (STAC) initiative, a one-year pilot program funded by the U.S. Department of Energy and administered by the National Association of State Energy Officials, is about to be launched. Funding for FY 03 is anticipated to be $8 million, and this figure may increase in future years. The solicitation is expected to be released in early July and have a tentative due date in early September. Awards are expected to be a minimum of $750,000 each with a 55 percent cost-share required. Proposals must come jointly from two or more states. Topic areas in 2003 include buildings, industry, transportation and hydrogen. The solicitation will require that either a state energy office or state-chartered institution (described in detail in the solicitation) submit the applications and that projects be multi-state.
