PEEC Metalcasting Best Practices Grant: As a
part of the Penn State University's (PSU) work plan to distribute
metal casting best practices in conjunction with established PA
assistance programs, a P2E2 site visit at Littlestown Foundry
was performed on September 24, 2003. Littlestown previously participated
in a joint visit of PSU, DEP, and Lehigh's Industrial Assessment
Center (IAC) team on July 24. After completing the Littlestown
P2E2 site visit portion of the best practices endeavor PSU will
decide if future P2 visits should be undertaken before, after,
or instead of IAC visits. The current plan is to wait until the
Littlestown IAC report is reviewed before PSU decides on a final
visit strategy to apply to their other willing participants in
the state. Another site visit to the J. Walter Miller Foundry
is being planned but has not yet been scheduled. PSU reports that
they individually visited J. Walter Miller a few weeks ago to
'set-up' the P2 visit and that the Foundry is looking forward
to DEP's site visit.
Metalcasting Best Practices in Pa.
One page write ups of three Metalcasting Best Practices presented
at the Pennsylvania Foundry Association meeting in May have been
posted on the Pennsylvania Metalcasting site. To see these write-ups

Best Practices Project Summary |
| The
Pennsylvania metalcasting industry has been, and continues
to be, a key part of the state’s industrial backbone.
This industry employs 15,000 Pennsylvanians in more than
160 companies and ships more than $2 billion of castings
annually impacting almost every other industrial and commercial
sector in the state. It is a major recycler of scrap metal,
a major energy user, and a key pollution prevention partner
in Pennsylvania. This program addresses critical technology
deployment needs that have been identified through an extensive
Pennsylvania metalcasting industry-wide roadmapping process.
Effort are directed to the development of a best practices
deployment program to reduce metalcasting industry energy
consumption, reduce environmental impact and improve competitiveness.
The Pennsylvania Foundry Association is a project partner.
Goals
Encourage
and leverage participation in existing state and federal
energy audit and environmental audit programs to maximize
their benefit to the metalcasting industry
Conduct
hands-on best practices works visits with small groups of
non-competing foundry executives to share technical, environmental
and management best practices
Conduct
an annual workshop to widely disseminate best practices
information from across Pennsylvania, the US and the world
Develop
a website highlighting best practices information and providing
an interactive roadmapping legacy for metalcasters
Respond
to requests for energy saving, pollution prevention and
technical information from Pennsylvania metalcasters |
