Industries of the Future More...
|
Goals The State of
Pennsylvania Industries of the Future Initiative will help Pennsylvania
Target industries:
- Energy and Process Efficiency: Accelerate
the development and adoption of energy-efficient technologies
and processes, by working with industry, academia, federal laboratories
and other state and local research institutions. Collectively,
the focus industries account for a significant share of the
energy use in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and hence significant
opportunities for energy efficiency improvement exist.
- Materials: Effective materials are
vital to the efficient operation of production and manufacturing
operations. New approaches to achieve more efficient use of
materials will be explored.
- Environmental and Economic Performance:
Pennsylvania industries face significant environmental challenges.
By working collaboratively with industry, academia and the laboratories,
these challenges can be addressed in the most cost effective
manner.
- Education and Awareness: Increase the
level of understanding among Pennsylvania business representatives,
legislators, and consumers, regarding the Industries of the
Future Program and the benefits that may be derived
How we choose an Industry Sector:
Industry Assessment Goals:
More small- and mid-sized businesses in Pennsylvania need to participate
in the State and Federal IoF program. Their input adds valuable
information about specific industrial sector needs as well as
information for future IoF program planning. PA strives
to build a relationship between businesses and the needs, goals,
and expertise resulting from IoF "vision" and "roadmap"
outreach projects. By applying this knowledge to corresponding
PA industrial sectors they will remain healthy and competitive
far into the future.
Identification
of State Champions - Who:
- Review PA Industrial Base
- Educate PA Industries regarding future "visions"
- Identify specific key players in each industry
- Connect key industrial players with PA Industrial
counterparts with counterparts on local
level
- Identify trade associations and professional
organizations active on a local level
- Identify local consultants/designers/service
providers
- Identify R&D/New Technology, and Innovation
Opportunities
Develop descriptions
of key industries, major plants (not only vision industries to start)

Challenge Programs and Cross-
cutting Technologies - The fit between PA's IOF industries and OIT's
Industries of the Future.
Goals
Determine what technical assistance from the
OIT challenge programs - motor systems and drives, compressed
air, steam, combined heat and power and process heat - is of most
interest to PA's industrial and technical communities.
Identification
of Local Players
- Review PAIOF participants
- Review IOF energy needs type
- Match PA Industries with Challenge Programs
- Match PA Industries with Crosscutting technologies
- Identify vendors/service providers in Challenge
and Crosscutting technologies arenas
- Match key industrial payers with PA Industries
- Match other players with counterparts on local
level
Determine
the size and characteristics of PA's small and medium industrial
and manufacturing facilities.

Partnership Development
As we assess the industries and resources in PA
we will be identifying and recruiting both the public and private
partners for participation in the IOF We are looking for potential
partners in the following organizations.
- State Agencies - Environmental Quality, Economic
Development, Energy and Natural Resources
- Industrial Associations: Pennsylvania Foundry
Association, Pennsylvania Coal Mining Association, the Aluminum
extruders Council, the Specialty Steel Industry of North America,
- Vendors, Trade Groups, Target Industries
- Professional and Technical Associations: Association
of Facilities Engineers, Association of Professional Energy
Managers, Air and Waste Management Association, Watershed associations
- Educational and Research Institutions
- Energy Suppliers - Electric and Gas Utilities
- Financial Institutions and Associations
- Community Service Organizations
Products
The goal is to improve the competitiveness of
PA industries, not simply deliver technical or financial assistance
or engage in research and development activities. The products
identified below are based on our current understanding of the
needs of PAs industries. We expect to:
- Deliver training and workshops
- Sponsor meetings and conferences
- Provide technical and financial assistance
- Develop leadership partners
- Develop a State Vision and Roadmap to assist
industry sectors in obtaining Federal and State funding for
targeted industrial research
- Identify and assist in an industrial showcase
project
We will use the products as a learning process for
the initiative as well as a service to the industrial community.
They are intended to act in two directions: the development and
delivery of a workshop or training session will provide feedback
from partners and clients. The feedback will help shape the activities
and, in turn result in new opportunities for the economic development
of these base industry sectors in our state. |
