These fact sheets apply to filtered surface water systems
serving at least 10,000 people. These fact sheets provide
additional information on the turbidity requirements of the
IESWTR. The fact sheets are downloadable in Adobe Reader
format.

Utah Spreadsheet
The downloadable Microsoft
Excel spreadsheet enables
water system staff and department staff to calculate the
inactivation of Giardia cysts if chlorine, chloramines or
ozone are used. It will also produce a disinfection
benchmark (baseline) graph for a twelve-month period.
Pennsylvania regulations require at least a 1-log
inactivation of Giardia at all times at surface water
treatment plants. Some plants must calculate special
inactivation levels each day as part of the IESWTR's
requirements. |
| Individual Filter Follow-up
Activities Notification Form |
|
Available on the eLibrary
(PDF file), (3800-FM-WSWM0002 6/2003)
This form can be used to report the Interim Enhanced Surface
Water Treatment Rule (IESWTR) or the Long Term 1 Enhanced
Surface Water Treatment Rule (LT1ESWTR) individual filter follow-up
activities. Water systems must report certain information to
their DEP District Office either by phone, fax, email or
mail within the prescribed time frames. District Office fax,
phone and address information is included on the back of
this form. |
| Filter Self-Assessment
Example Report |
|
Available on the eLibrary
(PDF File), (3800-BK-DEP2750 6/2004)
EPA's Interim Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule (IESWTR)
and Long Term 1 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule
(LT1ESWTR) may require certain water systems to conduct a
filter self-assessment. This report includes an example of
an acceptable filter self-assessment report. |
| Checklist for Producing
Filter Profiles |
|
Available on the eLibrary
The Interim Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule (IESWTR)
requires that public water systems report an obvious reason
or produce a filter profile if any individual filter's
turbidity exceeds certain trigger levels. Water system staff
can use this checklist to help produce an accurate and
usable filter profile. |
| Interpreting Filter Profiles |
|
Graphic version
-or- Text version
This is a PowerPoint presentation that gives specific
guidance on interpreting filter profiles. Proper
interpretation of filter profiles will help to identify
causes of performance spikes. |

Pennsylvania's Final IESWTR:
(PA Bulletin, Vol.31, No.29, Saturday, July 21, 2001)
This link will take you to the Environmental Quality Board's
amendment to Chapter 109 Safe Drinking Water Regulations.
The amendments pertain to filtration systems that serve at
least 10,000 people and that use either surface water
sources or groundwater sources that are under the direct
influence of surface water (GUDI). The amendments establish:
2-log (99%) Cryptosporidium removal requirements;
strengthened combined filter effluent turbidity performance
standards and individual filter turbidity provisions; and
disinfection benchmark provisions to assure continued levels
of microbial protection while facilities take the necessary
steps to comply with new disinfection byproduct standards.
Also, the amendments include Cryptosporidium in the
definition of ''GUDI.'' |
