Technical Advisory Committee on Diesel-Powered Equipment

The Technical Advisory Committee on Diesel-Powered Equipment (TAC) held a regularly scheduled meeting on April 15 at 9 a.m. at the Fayette County Health Center in Uniontown.

Minutes of the January 21 meeting were approved.

New Business:

TAC member Gene Davis reported on the training conducted by Cyprus-Amax Emerald and Cumberland Mines. This training was done very well and the company should be commended on their cooperation. Letters from the TAC and the Bureau of Deep Mine Safety will be sent to the company.

West Virginia University Testing: A discussion was held on the April 2 meeting at the West Virginia University (WVU) diesel lab in Morgantown, WV. The meeting was requested by Consolidated Coal Company to acquaint the Bureau and the TAC in the testing being done. Tests on engines by WVU were inconclusive.

Old Business:

Matthew A. Bertovich reported on the Bureau’s plans to conduct several training courses to assist industry interested in using diesel equipment. A one-day "train-the-trainer" course for clean up of diesel fuel spills will be done by the International Union of Operating Engineers. A second one-day workshop will be offered to assist operators with preparing an application, obtaining equipment approval, writing training plans, and update on Act 182. Training is tentatively planned for late May or early June.

The next regularly scheduled meeting will be held on July 15 at 9 a.m. in Uniontown.
