Tom Ridge Today, it is simply not enough to be tough on those who harm our environment. Today, we also must focus on preventing pollution, expanding green technology and wisely using our natural resources. By adopting our zero-pollution goal, Pennsylvanians have the opportunity for the first time in our 300-year history to take actions that will prevent environmental problems before they happen, rather than recover from pollution after it occurs. This year, we also will celebrate Earth Day by concluding "100 Days of Growing Greener." The $650 million "Growing Greener" initiative we enacted in December is the largest investment in our environmental future in modern Pennsylvania history. These 100 days are a celebration of our efforts to make our Commonwealth cleaner and greener. I am pleased to provide the enclosed educational materials for your use. The poster assists students in looking back at Pennsylvania's environmental heritage, while learning about new ways to measure environmental progress. As you use the educational materials in this packet, you will be able to measure "Environmental Progress in Action!" We are all stewards of "Penn's Woods." And, as we progress into this new millennium, may we prove ourselves worthy of this great trust. |
