2001 Earth Day Message from
Governor
Tom Ridge

You know your home address. But do you know your watershed address?

We each live in a watershed. What we do in that watershed not only affects us, but each of our neighbors downstream.

"Clean Watersheds! Clean Water!" is our theme for Earth Day 2001. It reflects the simple truth that keeping our watersheds clean protects the water we drink, provides a healthy wildlife habitat, and creates recreational fun for families all over the Commonwealth.

Plentiful, clean water is not only important to our quality of life, but to our economic health. Communities need clean drinking water for homes and businesses, and anglers, birdwatchers and boaters support hundreds of stores, parks and tackle shops.

Our "Growing Greener" initiative helps give watershed groups and communities across Pennsylvania the tools they need to keep our watersheds clean.

Education is the key to helping students and parents understand how clean watersheds promote clean water. The materials we have enclosed will help students understand how the actions we take affect watersheds. We hope you use them to teach young people how they can help protect one of our most precious resources.
