We share our planet Earth with millions of kinds of plant and animal life. From one-cell organisms to birds and mammals, from the tallest trees to the fungi at their roots, our lives are linked to these other organisms. Our own survival, in fact, depends on this diverse web of life. And our actions have a profound effect on its overall health and well-being. The theme of Earth Day 2002 -- "Focus On Biodiversity!" -- is designed to promote an understanding of biological diversity. By exploring the diversity of life and learning how intricately our lives are connected to other species, we can encourage good environmental stewardship -- and help ensure abundant food supplies, clean waters, good health and a high quality of life for future generations. Here at Earth Day Central, our Earth Day poster features Pennsylvania locations that serve as examples of the natural diversity that are in our own backyards. And, you will find links to more information and educational resources. I hope you will use these resources to help preserve and protect our Commonwealth's natural heritage. Through education, partnership and positive action, I am confident that Pennsylvania will keep on "Growing Greener!" |
