What's going on?
- Since Pennsylvania is a leader in agricultural production in the United States, it is important to understand the value that farming brings to our lives and future economic stability of Pennsylvania. By supporting our agricultural heritage, we allow many interconnected businesses to thrive and allow our economic future to look bright.
- Saving a business money will help our economy. If a business saves money, it can pass the savings along to you, the consumer. For example, there are many ways to save a hotel money while you are staying there. Remember that any waste not only costs a hotel money (which raises the lodging prices for the visitor), but also accounts for a loss of our precious natural resources.
What you can do:
- Supporting local farmers is easy and healthy. Going to local farmers' markets helps support your local growers. By supporting these hard working individuals, you help the economy in many ways. By buying their produce, you put money into their pockets. Farmers then spend their money, thereby sustaining other businesses.
- Money does grow on trees! Find out how through sustainable forestry. Visit the website of the Izaak Walton League of America at http://www.iwla.org/sep/newsltr. Click on August, 2002.
- While staying at a hotel, there are many ways to help the hotel cut costs and save resources. If there are recycling containers in the room, use them whenever possible. Make sure you always turn off the TV and turn off all the lights when you leave the room. By choosing to not have your bed sheets and towels changed everyday, you can save up to 13 gallons of water.
