
PROCLAMATION
EARTH DAY
April 22, 1996
WHEREAS, April 22, 1996, will be the 26th annual celebration of Earth Day; and
WHEREAS, Commonwealth departments and agencies under my jurisdiction will be scheduling events to express environmental concern throughout the month of April; and
WHEREAS, the Department of Environmental Protection has adopted the theme, "Taking the Next Step!" to emphasize the importance of not merely punishing offenders after pollution occurs, but of preventing pollution in the first place; and
WHEREAS, as citizens of the Commonwealth, we enjoy the beauty and benefits of our natural environment every time we breathe air, drink the water or visit a park; and
WHEREAS, whether at home, at school or in the workplace, each of us can make choices that have a positive impact on our environment.
THEREFORE, I, Tom Ridge, Governor of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania do hereby proclaim April 22, 1996, as EARTH DAY in Pennsylvania and encourage all citizens to recognize the importance of this opportunity which will provide us with a special occasion to renew our commitment to "Taking the Next Step!" to protect our home: Earth
