EARTH DAY 97: "DO YOUR SHARE!"

Earth Day is a time to renew our commitment to protecting our environment as well as recognizing our accomplishments in the 27 years since the first Earth Day was celebrated. It is a time to do our personal share to be the best environmental stewards we can be as individuals, employers, members of organizations or community leaders.

This year, DEP and other state agencies are focusing Earth Day activities around the theme, "Do Your Share!" With this theme, we remind all Pennsylvanians of their personal stakes in preserving our beautiful Commonwealth. Whether headquartered at our central office in the Rachel Carson State Office Building or at any of DEP’s six regional offices or six district mining offices, DEP employees are ready to help you celebrate Earth Day 97.

In addition to being the 27th anniversary of the first Earth Day celebration, 1997 is the 60th anniversary of the Clean Streams Law, the 25th anniversaries of the Pennsylvania Scenic Rivers Act and the Environmental Hearing Board, the 15th anniversary of the Wild Resources Conservation Board and the 10th anniversary of the $100 million bond issue to preserve farmland.

Don’t stand on the sidelines. Become involved! If you’re not sure how, contact local environmental groups, your county conservation district, or get ideas from activities others have planned. DEP’s Earth Day Central can help. Need a speaker? Looking for Earth Day posters, magnets or other hand-outs? Want help publicizing your event? Contact the DEP Earth Day Central hotline at 717 783-6397.
