Summary of May 18, 2000 Groundwater Symposium

More than 150 people attended DEP’s first Groundwater Symposium on May 18, 2000 at the Rachel Carson State Office Building in Harrisburg. The symposium brought together federal, state and local groundwater scientists and managers to exchange information and ideas about effective groundwater and watershed protection programs. The goal of the symposium was to promote the protection and prudent use of Pennsylvania’s groundwater resources.

Twenty-two different sessions were held covering a multitude of water issues such as state and community projects and programs to protect groundwater, quantity issues and various threats to clean groundwater.

Lawrence C. Tropea, DEP’s Deputy Secretary for the Office of Water Management, was the keynote speaker. Deputy Secretary Tropea spoke on the importance of groundwater, noting that over 50 percent of Pennsylvanians rely on groundwater. He also discussed Pennsylvania’s watershed approach to integrated water resources management.

Pam Bishop of DEP's Bureau of Regulatory Counsel was the lunchtime speaker. She spoke on the legal aspects of the water quantity – quality connection as brought forth by the Environmental Hearing Board case on Oley Township, et al vs. PA DEP and Wissahickon Spring Water, Inc.

The final agenda, speaker abstracts and speaker contact information for the symposium provide a summary of the day's events.

The next Ground Water Symposium is planned for May 2001.
